Hawaii State law requires that the medical practitioner needs to sign a referral to physical therapy in order for the patient to come to physical therapy. If your office is not familiar with our clinic, please contact us and we can either fax you a prescription or you may download the prescription form.

The patient can bring the prescription with him/her on their first visit, or you may fax it to our clinic prior to their first visit.

Once your patient is in the hands of our staff, we communicate regularly with each referring physician through progress reports that will include objective measurements and progress towards the patient’s treatment plans.

Manual Therapy Technique—Strain/Counterstrain Treatment

Strain/Counterstrain is a manual therapy (hands-on) technique used by the physical therapist for the treatment of muscle and joint pain. Tight muscles and painful joints of the body are carefully placed toward positions of comfort. Strain/Counterstrain is an effective and extremely gentle technique because its action for treatment moves the patient’s body away from the painful, restricted directions of motion.

Strain/Counterstrain can be used to treat various ailments from accidents to chronic injuries. This gentle and non-traumatic technique was developed by Dr. Lawrence Jones, an osteopathic physician in 1955. It facilitates the healing process by decreasing pain, muscle guarding and swelling.

Please call and ask to speak to a physical therapist at Fukuji & Lum for more information about this technique.
